An up-suction magnetic separator, also called upward suction magnetic drum separator, is a specialized counterflow magnetic separation machine widely used for slag iron recovery and fine ferrous metal sorting. Unlike conventional overband magnetic separators that pull iron from the top of the material layer, this equipment lifts ferrous particles upward against gravity through its rotating magnetic drum. It performs excellently for heavy, dense mixed materials such as steel slag, incineration bottom ash, crushed scrap and mineral aggregates. It is favored by recycling plants and metallurgical slag processing lines for high iron recovery rate and low material jamming risk. Whether you upgrade an existing sorting line or build a turnkey metal recovery system, this upward suction iron separator is a reliable option for high-purity ferrous removal.
The core component of the up-suction magnetic separator is a rotating drum embedded with high-strength neodymium permanent magnets. When mixed materials pass through the separation chamber, ferrous fragments, iron particles and steel debris are attracted upward to the drum surface by the concentrated magnetic field. The drum rotates countercurrently, carrying captured iron away from the material flow toward the non-magnetic zone. Once leaving the effective magnetic field, ferrous materials fall automatically into the iron collection hopper by gravity and centrifugal force, while non-ferrous materials continue forward to the next sorting station. This continuous self-discharging structure supports 24-hour stable operation without frequent manual cleaning.

Compared with common magnetic separation equipment, the up-suction design solves the blockage problem caused by heavy slag and large iron chunks. Its deep penetrating magnetic field can capture fine iron particles buried deep inside dense material piles, which is hard for ordinary suspended magnetic separators. The magnetic system uses high-grade NdFeB magnets with low demagnetization rate and long service life. The drum surface is equipped with wear-resistant protective layer to resist abrasion from hard slag and sharp scrap. The frame is heavy-duty and dust-proof, suitable for harsh dusty workshop environments. We provide customizable drum width, magnetic intensity and feeding inlet size according to your hourly capacity and material characteristics. Low energy consumption and simple maintenance reduce your long-term operation cost.
Up-suction magnetic separators are mainly deployed in steel slag recycling lines, waste incineration bottom ash (IBA) processing plants, scrap metal sorting facilities, mineral beneficiation plants and construction waste recycling projects. In slag treatment lines, it recovers usable iron from crushed blast furnace slag and steel slag to raise metal yield. In bottom ash sorting, it removes ferrous contaminants before eddy current separation, improving non-ferrous metal sorting purity. It also matches shredders, conveyors and vibrating screens to form a complete material sorting system. Many recycling operators choose this model when dealing with thick, heavy material layers where ordinary cross-belt magnets cannot reach buried iron.
Regular belt magnetic separators work well for light, loose materials on conveyor belts. But when materials are thick, compact or full of heavy slag, magnetic force cannot penetrate deep enough. The up-suction magnetic separator adopts counterflow drum upward adsorption, which is designed for dense and heavy feedstock. It achieves higher iron recovery for deep-buried ferrous particles. If your raw material is light and loose, a belt magnetic separator is enough; if you process steel slag, bottom ash and heavy scrap mixture, upward suction magnetic separator brings obvious better sorting performance.
Q: Is this permanent magnet or electromagnetic type?
A: Our standard version is permanent up-suction magnetic separator. Electromagnetic type can be customized for extra strong magnetic demand.
Q: Can it work together with eddy current separator?
A: Yes. It is usually placed upstream to remove ferrous metals first, protecting the eddy current separator and boosting non-ferrous sorting purity.
Q: Can you adjust the magnetic strength?
A: Magnetic intensity can be customized based on your material, fine iron or large steel block recovery.
